Awesome day of action! We hand-delivered letters to multiple embassies and attracted a lot of public attention. With the International Whaling Commission meeting happening in mid-June, it’s important to start ramping up pressure to create a whale sanctuary. Want to show your personal support? Why support the South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary?
Reason #3: Whale Watching
Healthy whale populations have an economic benefit to costal communities. Whale Watching brings in over $1.25 billion worldwide and around 10 million people a year enjoy this form of eco-tourism.
Why support the South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary?
Reason #2: It Will Bring Attention to Other Whale Threats
Along with illegal commercial fishing, whale populations also face threats such as chemical pollution, oil exploration, noise pollution, ship strikes, entanglement, climate change, and krill harvesting. SAWS clearly won’t remove all of these threats, but will take care of one of the deadliest (commercial fishing). It could also facilitate fund-raising to address all of the other threats to whales.
Why support the South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary?
Reason #1: Whale Population Recovery
Because of foreign whaling fleets, many of the South Atlantic whale populations have been severely depleted. The sanctuary will promote their recovery and provide opportunities for important research that will aid in future recovery efforts.
Heading out to embassies to urge countries to support the South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary (SAWS). Last year, countries lead by Japan walked out during the vote for this important sanctuary. We’re demanding that this year will be different.
Day 11: Out with Greenpeace Semester students calling on Antigua and other member nations of the IWC (International Whaling Commission) to support the Southern Atlantic Whale Sanctuary.
Many of the South Atlantic whale populations were severely depleted by foreign whaling fleets, like the southern right and humpback whales. The Sanctuary will assure their recovery through protection and research.
